UN Condemns Iran Abuses
Yesterday, the UN General Assembly's Third Committee passed a
resolution (A/C.3/61/L.41) expressing "serious concern" at the human
rights situation in Iran, by a vote of 70-48-55. Iran tried to kill
the resolution with a "No Action" motion (a tactic that worked Monday
for Uzbekistan), but the motion was rejected by a slight margin of 75
in favor, 77 against, and 24 abstentions. Canada, still outraged at
the torture and murder of Canadian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi at the
hands of Iranian authorities, co-sponsored the censure together with
EU countries and the USA.
The text of the resolution slams Iran for its harassment of
journalists and human rights workers, its persistent failure to comply
with international standards of the administration of justice, and the
regime's continued use of torture, public executions, violence against
women, and discrimination against ethnic minorities. In Sudan's
opinion, such resolutions are "aimed at settling scores" and "[have]
nothing to do with protecting human rights." The sponsors of the mass
killings in Darfur did not explain what in their view would qualify as
human rights protection, but one can only guess.
